New possibility of heat storage
The subsurface conditions of the Upper Rhine Graben offer enormous potential for sustainable heat supply. Prof. Dr. Eva Schill and Prof. Dr. Thomas Kohl are therefore developing novel geothermal concepts for variable heat generation and storage scenarios at KIT. Base-load capable heat production generates a heat surplus in the warm months of the year. In order to use this heat surplus, a seasonal high-temperature heat storage system is tested in DeepStor at KIT Campus North, which is filled in summer and discharged in winter. The scientific demonstrator is an underground high-temperature storage facility in a former oil field with recovery temperatures of > 110°C. DeepStor will be integrated into the existing heat grid and demonstrate the feasibility of such a storage facility.
