Detect Alzheimer's disease at an early stage
Researchers at Institute for Functional Interfaces (IFG) of KIT have made a pioneering advance: By analyzing peptide fingerprints, they enable earlier detection of Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease. These neurodegenerative diseases are often caused due to misfolding of peptides and proteins. The method developed at KIT can detect the misfoldings via the drying structure of protein and peptide solutions within minutes. By identifying these characteristic biomarkers, early stages of the disease can be detected even before typical symptoms appear. The innovative approach opens up new perspectives for early diagnosis as well as timely treatment and marks a significant advance in the fight against Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
