THEATER PREMIERE: "NERDS SAVE THE WORLD"

The science performance "Nerds save the world" celebrated its premiere on June 15, 2023, on KIT's South Campus. Theater creators of the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and scientific employees of KIT link important questions of the future in an artistic form of expression in the jointly designed performance. Interested parties can visit the performance until July 20.

Successful Kick-Off

In a sold-out premiere last Thursday, the Badisches Staatstheater Karlsruhe and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology brought their co-production "Nerds Save the World" to a close to enthusiastic applause. About 30 scientists and citizens were involved in the theatrical science performance on the premises of KIT Campus South. In a multifaceted show, they entered into a lively dialog with their audience.

Fusion of research and theater

"I ate the greening fruits of desire" Antonia Hoffmann sings a poem by Mascha Kaléko to the "Dance of Algorithms". Because problems of graph theory can be explained with words, but it becomes poetic when dancing with time complexity and search algorithms. Algorithms, computer-aided material design, mobility, ferroelectricity are just some of the research areas that collide with art in this evening with relish. They will be artistically explored by the protagonists together with an intergenerational ensemble.

This will pave new paths between art and science, conveying the action horizons and hopes of research - in a joint attempt by both institutions to explore the generative potential of theatrical science communication: How can we shape a future through good shared stories whose ground is in addressing the challenges of the present? Already on the walks between the venues, this discussion began among the audience members: "People meet here who have come for very different motives: Those who simply want to see theater, others attracted by the theme, still others who want to get to know their place of education or work in a new way. The questions posed in the performance and the strolling between the venues invites conversation already during the performance, which can be continued in the auditorium with a writing assignment and in the get-together after the performance," Nike-Marie Steinbach, director of the Volkstheater division, describes her experience during the premiere.

The world of tomorrow

"KIT, Du schöne Zukunftslaube" is the epilogue. With her exclamation, player Julia Sauter meets a smiling and thoughtful audience in the summer-warm "Garden of Utopias". Future, the basic condition of which is the preservation of the natural basis of life, is in the foreground in many scenes: "With the artistic implementation of the scientific research topics, I could not only look at the topics of our project, but also at topics from other disciplines in a completely new light," said Sandra Kaufmann-Weiss, who works at the KIT InnovationCampus Mobility of the Future.
