PILOT PLANTS - SECOND CHANCE FOR GREENHOUSE GASES



INERATEC GMBH PILOT PLANTS IN OPERATION THROUGHOUT EUROPE

Lappeenranta, Finland:

The first gas-to-liquid pilot plant was installed in Finland as part of the SOLETAIR 2017 project. The "Direct Air Capture" unit developed by the Technical Research Center of Finland (VTT) filters carbon dioxide out of the air. An electrolysis unit developed at Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT) uses solar power to generate the necessary hydrogen. Both gases are then converted into reactive synthesis gas at high temperature and transformed into liquid fuels in INERATEC’s microstructured chemical reactor. The pilot plant has a production capacity of up to 80 liters per day.

Sabadell, Spain:

A power-to-gas plant in the Barcelona area produces synthetic natural gas from renewable electricity and carbon dioxide. The Spanish energy company Naturgy, together with INERATEC, is testing the use of energy from a wastewater treatment plant to produce the energy carrier methane. The advantage is that the renewable gas can be fed into the existing gas infrastructure and transported to areas throughout Spain. Until now, such decentralized production was not economically feasible because the chemical process usually requires large, costly plants.

Laufenburg, Switzerland:

Together with car manufacturer Audi and Energiedienst Holding AG, INERATEC is doing research on a power-to-liquid plant for the e-diesel production, a sustainable, electricity-based fuel. The energy required for this comes from the Laufenburg hydropower plant in Switzerland. The plant will store surplus electricity as fuel with which conventional combustion engines can be operated. The plant is scheduled for completion at the end of 2019. It is expected to produce 400,000 liters of synthetic diesel per year. The aim of the project is to make a contribution on the way to zero-emission mobility.
