PORTRAIT - WAVE-LENGTHS AHEAD

PROF. THOMAS ZWICK

Professor Zwick's career in Karlsruhe has already begun with his academic education at University of Karlsruhe (TH), today known as KIT. He obtained both his engineering diploma (1994) and later his doctorate (1999) at the Institute for High Frequency Technology and Electronics (IHE). Afterwards, he initially continued to work as research assistant at the institute and in 2001, he shifted to industry work at T. J. Watson Research Center of the IT company IBM in the US. There he worked on miniaturized millimeter-wave modules. After three years, he returned to Germany and took over as group leader for the development of high-frequency technology for automotive applications at Siemens AG in Lindau.

In 2007, KIT appointed him professor at his former institute, the Institute of High Frequency Engineering and Electronics (IHE), where he has been professor and institute director ever since. His research covers a wide spectrum – from basic research on novel components and concepts of high-frequency technology to application-oriented solutions, such as radar sensors for industrial automation and systems for gigabit radio transmission. Prof. Zwick was awarded the Faculty Teaching Award in 2014 and 2017 for his outstanding teaching in the lectures “Antennas and multi-antenna systems” and “Fundamentals of radio frequency technology”, among others. He received further recognition for his work in 2017 when he was appointed member of Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities as well as in 2018, when he was named an IEEE Fellow.
