Digitalization for more sustainable pork production

Digital tools are being developed at the Institute of Industrial Production (IIP) to identify optimization potential in value chains.



German pork production is facing major challenges: High quality requirements, sustainability and economic profitability must be combined. The SPECK research project (Systemic optimization of the meat value chain using the example of pig farming through the development and embedding of digital tools) meets these challenges with the help of digitalization and life cycle assessment. The aim of the project is to identify optimization potential along the pork production value chain. To this end, digital tools are being developed that collect data along the entire value chain and enable data transfer between the links in the value chain. This data includes, among other things, the ecological impact of the entire production through the life cycle assessment results of individual links in the value chain.
