Replacement for fossil raw materials from agricultural waste
Researchers from KIT and the University of Hohenheim are investigating the use of agricultural waste such as chicory beet as a substitute for fossil raw materials. The aim of the study is to make the chemical industry less dependent on oil and gas and to switch to renewable, bio-based raw materials. Chicory beets contain carbohydrates that can be converted into hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF). Valuable products can be manufactured from this raw material using catalysts. However, some biomass constituents disrupt this process by poisoning the precious metal catalysts. The research team was able to improve the stability of the catalysts so that they can now work with higher concentrations of critical ingredients. An important step towards a bio-based chemical industry.
