Hydrogen Power for Construction and Agricultural Machinery
Whether on construction sites, in agriculture or inmaterial handling, high-performance engines are indispensable. To make these engines climate-friendly in the future, the PoWer project at KIT is working together with industry partners to develop hydrogen-fuelled powertrains for off-road
vehicles. Coordinated by MAHLE, three institutes at KIT are investigating how hydrogen can be used efficiently and safely in combustion engines. Their research covers optimal combustion processes, exhaust gas after-treatment, and material compatibility. The goal is to create robust systems that remain reliable under the continuous, heavy load conditions typical of off-road operation. The project is supported by TÜV Rheinland and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, which is funding the the three year project with roughly €5 million. PoWer could thus pave the way for low emission powertrains in excavators, combine harvesters and other utility vehicles – a crucial step toward decarbonising heavy machinery beyond the road.
